Akufo Addo: Moving too fast forward?

Nana Addo,

I have just one question for you. Do you want to die?
I’ve just heard that your convoy has been involved in yet another accident – this time on the Accra-Takoradi Highway. This is about the third accident in as many weeks, isn’t it?
Earlier this month, there was an accident involving the bus carrying some journalists covering your campaign. This happened in the Eastern Region. Few got hurt and no one died. Thank God. My very good friend, Bernard Saibu was on the bus but escaped unhurt. I would have been devastated if Bernard (the JOY FM reporter ‘embedded’ your campaign) had suffered any injury.
Just about a week ago, two of the cars in your convoy ran themselves into a ditch somewhere in the north. Few were injured and once again, no one died – thankfully.
These are the accidents that have happened very recently. I am aware that the convoy has been involved in other accidents in other places – even before you became a presidential candidate.
So just tell me: what the heck is going on? Don’t tell me the witches in your ‘house’ are after you. I don’t want to hear you (or anyone close to you) say that someone has invoked Antoa Nyama to strike you down.
I have this very strong feeling that you think you are president already and you can speed around anyhow. Or have you been nursing illusions that you may just be the next Lewis Hamilton? Please you are not a president (yet) and you most definitely will not be the next Lewis Hamilton.
So, just slow down! Otherwise, you are going to die. You can call me a “doom monger”. I don’t give a damn. I’m just giving you a ‘citizen’s advise’. Take it and save a life (which may as well be yours) or leave it.
Do you remember what happened to JAK last year? He escaped an accident when an idiot rammed into his speeding convoy. He was lucky. You might not be as lucky.
They say the “speed that thrills is the speed that kills”. It has never made sense to me that presidents drive at such high speeds. I remember when JAK escaped that accident, I told someone to advise him to slow down. Well, as usual, he didn’t heed my advice and he keeps driving around at top speed as if his head is “not there”. But I’m not worried about him because he will be going very soon. Right now, seriously, I don’t care if he speeds to his death. I can endure 30 days of Aliu without having to doze off in boredom.
But I’m worried about you. You seem to be driving faster than even the sitting president does. I know you may be thinking that this is a rehearsal. It’s not! In any case, why rehearse when you know very well that you may lose the election? Or you think it’s already a done deal?
Let’s just assume that you win the election and become the president. Do you think you will have the moral authority to advise us to be careful on the roads and not drive above the speed limit?
In essence, Nana, I’m saying that when you sit in your convoy and allow your chauffeurs to drive like mad clones of Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton you are breaking the law and endangering lives. Last time I checked you are not above the law. So, for God’s sake, slow down. I know you in a hurry to move forward. But at these speeds, trust me, you might be moving alright... but not forward. But, hey, if you want to move faster forward towards Awudome or the Royal Akyem Mausoleum, then, be my guest – speeeeeed, Nana, speed.

  Hey Ato -
Good blog entry. Ghana's leaders (and its potential leaders) are clearly not setting a good example. I remember very VERY well how awful the drivers were in Ghana and how fast they drove. I still think about it sometimes and I haven't been to Ghana in well over two years!

Cheers,
Rachel (JHR Alumni)

  Ato's Response
There hasn't been much change, my friend. Nice hearing from you again. Cheers!

Ato, i love this particular piece and it not be addressed to nana alone but to all those who think they are reeasing like MPs, and Ministers of state. This is nothing but a timely advise and you need to be paid for such a free advise to all them. i dont think even the Arch Angle Gabriel from from will waste his time to come give this advise. "they" should all be informed that the voice of the people thru Ato is the voice from GOD. Ato just keep it up. And as rightly said they can take your advise and live for the Ghana which they belive in or move fastforward like Micheal Schumaker to the Awudome or Osu cemetary. God bless Ghana.

Ato, you should have met one of such convoys on the Winneba-Accra stretch. i was not sure whether it was the President or any of the aspirants but it was just crazy, to put it simply. Irrespective of the direction you were moving you just have to leave the road and drive into the bush. They may not be involved in accidents themselves but they may have caused accidents too.
  Ato's Response
I've seen them before... they are as scary as they are senseless.

Ga gbloe ake!!(Ewe). Ato,in fact u are an angel sent from heaven. For this article, Consultation fee must be paid into the Nokofio Bank Account. I wonder how the despatch riders use the motor bikes as if its got seat belts and how the so called "experienced drivers" speed as if they don't know that speed can kill. If they are acting on instructions, then they better watch out!
We never learn!! Taking into consideration the accidents involving presidential convoys, the Akosombo one involving JJ and that of JAK's encounter, one can say "they don't care".
And now, the aspiring presidential candidates and their various representatives won't learn from it. Or don't they want to go to the "G.J House" ? A word from Ato to the wise is.......

Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
The mate was fixed by the bosun's pike
The bosun brained with a marlinspike
And cookey's throat was marked belike
It had been gripped by fingers ten;
And there they lay, all good dead men
Like break o'day in a boozing ken
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
  Ato's Response
Ama, as for today I think your 'nyansah' he deserted you. I can't make head or tail of what you are saying. Or am I the one who can't appreciate the 'nyansah'?

Nice piece Ato, hope those who have ears heed to this advice cos such crazy speed would surely lead anyone to that 6 feet grave waiting in the Awudome and Osu cemetary.
  Ato's Response
The 6-feet is not what we really wish for anyone though.

Good work done Ato. Indeed you have hit the nail right on the head where it's supposed to be. Sometimes you wonder whether the convoys have helicopter blades under them. It's high time everybody slowed down. Anyway I want to prophesy to you that next year you will be adjudged the Journalist of the Year.

ATO,WOOOOOW I LOOOOOVE YOUR STYLE OF WRITTING.SOMETIMES THE TOPIC CAN BE SOMETHING ELSE BUT THE WRITTING, PERFECT.I HAVE ONE THINGS TO SAY,INCUMBENT GOVT SHOULD ALWAYS LEARN THAT BEING PARTY IN POWER DOES NT MEAN YOUR PARTY PREZ CANDIDATE MUST BE TREATED LIKE A PREZ ELECT B4 THE ELECTION.THE CLOCK SOMETIMES CHANGE HANDS AND IT COULD BE THE OTHER WAY ROUND,WE IN THE NDC DID THAT SOME FEW YRS BACK AND THE RULING GOVT DIDNT LIKE IT BUT ITS THE SAME THING BEING DONE.AM NOT COMPLAINING BECOS ITS OUR TURN NOW,THIS MUST STOP.HENCE THE MOTORCADE LEADING NANA TO DRIVE AROUND WITH SUCH SPEED AM NOT IN GHANA BUT I HEARD HE BEEN CHAUFFEURED AROUND WITH MOTORCADE PERHAPS THUS WHAT IS MAKING HIM SPEED LIKE PREZ.LONG LIVE NDC LONG LIVE GHANA.

Ato, that's good advice. I think the MTTU should be up to the task. Anyone who speeds should either be fined or taken to court and jailed. In the U.S. they have speeding tickets. Nana Addo should take his time and slow down. What message is he sending to our drivers? Slow down Nana
  Ato's Response
I'm sure that the MTTU boss will need to find himself a new job before he dares give Nana Addo a ticket... that job should preferrably be with the UN and out of the country.

Are their campaigns taking place elsewhere other than in our beloved Ghana. Power, they say corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. They can continue speeding all over the place. Who know they are speeding to the Awudomes and Osus? They can choose to be tenants of these two places but GHANA WILL CONTINUE TO LIVE WITHOUT THEM. Thank you Ato for the caution.

Ato, believe it or not, they do it with so much impudence!!!! i once witnessed the convey on the kanda highway moving on the opposite lane simply because there was traffic on the normal lane. Hence Cars moving on that lane found themselves facing the convey and had to quickly park aside to save their dear lives.can you imagine?? this is totally against traffic regulations. i wonder if even the sitting president has ever done that....
  Ato's Response
I believe it. I think I have seen something like that before and I was in the lane they were 'violating'.

Wow! Ato this is what I tell people is happening and they see nothing wrong with it especially the security agencies. If Nana Addo(who is not above the law) is speeding(over doing it) and the police finds nothing wrong why must they arrest commercial drivers for similar offenses? Selective justice clearly manifested.
  Ato's Response
Once again, Quophy, I am humbled. Sometimes I wonder...

Can someone educate me....please. Is there any special provision for minister, MPs etc to drive past everyone against traffic rules. I guess not...well then tell the habitually late MPs, Ministers etc to get in lane. They are not above the law. They must learn to set out in time to be there on time!!!

I dont also agree with you that Nana may lose the election after all. Nana will win this election.
However, i think your advice is good for all ghanaians to take note and not only Nana because all lives are important even a lunatics inclusive.

ato, nice piece, interspersed with some little wits which made me smile. but to substantive things, you said the first accident involves a bus with journalists; i wonder whether akuffo addo was in there. the next involved some cars in his convoy; was he in that one too? and the last one, the subject of this piece, was it akuffo addo's car that got involved in the accident? i think accident on campaign trails are serious things and often, party supporters get ahead of themselves and do thing which the candidates (in the same convoy) might not even be aware of.

i know of akuffo addo's long convoys (or at least i've heard of it from various reporters and comedians), but i havent heard of overspeeding. you mentioned that he ALLOWS his drivers to OVERSPEED. i dont know whether it comes from the context of one of your frolics or whether its a matter of fact. if it is, its absolutely unfortunate for a presidential candidate to so behave, and he compromises himself and his campaign. if not, your whole article is undermined.

what such incidents should make us think about is the manners and outlooks of the various supporters (some of them very hungry) who go after these candidates doing anything under the sun to catch their eyes, and in the process, as you said, endangering their lives and that of thers. and i can bet you, this is not a preserve of the npp or the ndc or the cpp or uncle dan's party (if he hadnt been disqualified!)
  Ato's Response
In all instances the cars were part of Nana's convoy and they tend to speed so much because of him. I say he allows it because as a leader, I am sure if he found reason and told the drivers to slow down, they will. This is not about supporters. It's about the candidate's convoy.

Academic nonsense and ignorance, maybe. What's my standing? A citizen of the republic. I think I've earned the right to speak when the man who wants to be my president breaks the law and endangers lives needlessly. PNDC/NDC era? I suppose you don't want to move forward, eh??

ato, thnaks a lot. this is the very issue i have been arguing abt with my fellows at the office. i am not sure if its nana of kufour who is the president now. anytime nana has a rally, there is traffick in town, he speeeds abt with his helmet-less motorcade thus endegring the lives of young men who want nothing but a fwe cedis for the day. i met them this month on the takpradi road when your ecxellency was going for a rally . and believe you me, we were just saved by God. our car was virtually shoved off the road. it is total disregard to law and human life.the last time i read , it was"humble yourself, and you shall be lifted up" nana is obviously lifting himself up, and i wldnt be surprised if he is humbeld come dec 7th. keep your work uo ato. i am one of your admirers.

that was a very wonderful piece pls send a copy to nana himself. he might not be aware that his convoys pose a risk. nana dont want to die so it might be an oversight remember a persondrawing a line does not see it is crocked untill told so ( this is an akan proverb i hope i have written it correctly if not pls let me no. in uk his drivers would have been caught by the camera and given fines and points but as u no our beloved country is full of learned poeple whose ideas is only in the head and does not implement any practical policies have not head of speed limits and speed cameras. i nearly got knocked down a zebra crossing at spintex. isnt that amazing that drivers dont no the essence of a zebra crossing but they all have lisences? well done for being bold and saying it as it is. but pls send a copy of this one to nana. we dont want him to die before ghanaians give him a stse burial and another millions of our money wasted instead of improving road safety health care education... should i go on?..guess u not

That is the situation we find ourselves in here in Ghana. If you're president, you're completely above the law. Had it been an ordinary man, he would have been quizzed by the cops for wrongdoing. We are told not to import right-hand cars to the country but president kuffour did in his early days in office and the laws were bent for him to swim comfortably to his destination.

Ato, listen carefully, I'm not fazed by these acidents involving Nana Akuffo Addo's convoy. Where Nana is there is always disaster in the name of politics. Go back and investigate the sudden death of his legal wife. Again, take a cursory look at the sudden event of guests dying mysteriously at their hotel rooms on the ring road near Nima Junction (Riss Hotel) Probe to know how fire and grenade detonated in the same hotel in 1992 and 96. You could be best judge to yourself

I'm one of the few guys who agree with you in many occasions but there's something I find difficult to understand. Can you please tell me what at all Veep Alieu Mahama has done to you. I dont know what it is but I hope it is not mere hatred or has he tried chasing your beautiful wife or something? I simply seem not to get it.
  Ato's Response
Simple answer is: NOTHING. Why do you ask?

Some of us would have wished there is a way for us to support your work financially without being called detractors of the government. If there is any way some of us can support your work financially, please let us know and we shall support you.
  Ato's Response
Thanks, Mr. Mills. Let's discuss this in 'chambers'.

I think you can write some piece of advice to them so that they will slow down when they are driving than to insult them.It is not nice to insult your President because some foreigners also read the news from Ghana.
  Ato's Response
Foreigners? Why should I care about them?

I am always impressed by how objective you take on issues. One of my biggest problem with us Ghanaians is our inability to separate 'personality' from 'issue'. When somebody does something and you comment on it, they rather look at the person, and not his actions. It is the reason for the double standards and 'tin-goddism' we witness in Ghana. If somebody is driving carelessly, should we be bothered about whom it is or what he is doing? I think those who have criticised Ato should know that careless driving is dangerous to many more people than just Nana.
And there was a gentleman who said he did a 'literature review' on your article as a 'PhD' student? Man, how can you do a lit review on a single article? Which school do you attend and what course are you reading?

Ato, if it is true that the size of your head makes you write articles such as this, then i want my children's head to be BIGGER than yours. Please can you show me how to do it?
  Ato's Response
Tell your children to give 'something small' to Angel Gabriel before they are conceived. He will sort them out.

A good one there. My thumbs are up for you. Torfiakoa!!! if should happen that they kill themselves through this form of indisciplined and reckless driving, they should never my tax money to organise a state funeral for them.

What I dont like about you is how you always force to wake me up with your newspaper review during the weekdays. Cant just resist listening to you. Kudos
  Ato's Response
If there is any way you think I can help in dealing with that little dislike of yours, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Good piece, Ato. But I just have a question. I hope that you (or any other person reading) will be able to help me with it. What are the views of security experts on this topic? Is it as bad as we think, or could it have been worse if they were to slow down? Certainly, we cannot defer such things (whether their convoys should slow down or speed) to the whims and caprices of the president or Nana or Mills or any other person. Things are not always what they appear to be on the surface. Has the security apparatus perhaps so-advised?
  Ato's Response
Things are mostly what they seem to me. If the guy is speeding, what more is there to it other than the fact that he's speeding? Ellen Johnson Sirleaf drives around very slowly in a very volatile environment.

Your advice to Nana is good, but I have a big question for you,Is your Nana your party's Political opponent. You have already voted for your candidate which I dont believe is Nana. You voiced your Political views and prejudices in the advice and that is wrong.Let the People of Ghana and not YOU decide who their President is. The days of NDC is over.
  Ato's Response
I think I still have a Ghanaian passport and I am going to be part of that decision, whether you like it or not.

Hi Ato, If there was anyone in Ghana journalism who is going to fast forward, then it is you. I read sometime ago that you were/are inspired by Kwaku Sakyi Addo, and I have followed not only your thoughts, but also your style of writing to see the direction of your journalism. No doubt, you are better than most journalists in Ghana--at least you write readable grammar. My observation, however, is that you are in such a haste to make a name (like Kwaku); while that is fine, you need to be conscious of your own weaknesses. I just read what you wrote about Nana Addo's convoy, and I simply do not see what point you want to make. Apart from the lack of substance, I also see your style as dry and sometime overelaborated. You see, this is where your desire to establish becomes apparent, at least to some of us who observe journailism practice in Ghana. It is great to see you coming up, but slow down and learn the trade. As you once said, Kwaku asked you to find your niche and 'shake the basket,' I personally think you need to do that and do it very well. You may be a great jounalist, but you still need to learn. Do not be too carried away by your current name. You should know when your blog should become a news item. Good luck brother, I will advise as you go along.
  Ato's Response
Your advice is always welcome. Let's start off this way: What is 'substance'? I am always ready to learn.
