BOOK REVIEW: Nana Ama Agyeman-Asante on ‘Pretending to be President’

I have just finished reading ‘PRETENDING TO BE PRESIDENT’, the first installment in the ‘most irreverent series’ authored by Ato Kwamena Dadzie. The book made up of a collection of letters by Ato’s alter-ego is a compelling look at the state of affairs in his country as is. The imposter president dares members of his government and his citizenry “not to settle for less”.

The book reveals a surprisingly candid President J. A. Fukuor as he tackles issues of corruption, erratic power supply, thieving men of God and endless national celebrations in his weekly letters.

“I feel horrible presiding over this rotten nation but I’m better than my predecessor,” President Fukuor says.
The illustrations by Mahesh and the wit-filled, well-written letters are an expose on the hard realities of life for citizens in Fukuor’s Sikaman – the thievery in high places, corrupt police and judiciary, inefficient provision of social services, utilities and infrastructure. The intent of these letters is to give Fukuor’s ‘countrymen and women, loyalists and opponents’ a few jolts to get them to put partisanship aside and demand the best from their leaders.

I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed reading ‘PRETENDING TO BE PRESIDENT’. It was the one of the moments where the cliché ‘side splitting laughter’ is indeed true.

Satirizing most of the characters in the book, he writes with a sharp sense of rhythm and vivid sensory details to make his point. Now the word “langalanga” has a whole new meaning to me – thanks Ato Kwamena Dadzie.

While his style of writing in this book may seem outrageous, it is evidence that Ghana’s most irreverent journalist is now a fully fledged satirist with real insight.

*Nana Ama Agyemang Asante is a very good friend of mine. She has made it her mission in life to help me make a little more money to supplement my rather meager newsman’s pay cheque. So, please, take what she’s written with a pinch of salt.

@Ato this small book you wrote you're are beating your chest and bringing on board so many praise singers to help you blow your trumpet. But tell me when at all will you publish those who will be bashing you with this book. And in any case that word “langalanga” what does it mean. God bless Ghana
  Ato's Response
There are some more reviews coming up and all of them are very positive. Why not get your copy and 'bash' me with it. I'd gladly publish a negative review. Deal?

@Ato, what is the whole new meaning of the word “langalanga”????????????? i'm curious!

meanwhile, if that Fukour or Kufuor says he is better than his predecessor he should tell us how!!! because his predecessor never gave himself any foolish award with taxpayers money like he Fukuor or Kufuor did.

so what is the standard measure of better???
  Ato's Response
Please get a copy of the book from Silver Bird and you'd know.

Pretending to be President will be a huge resource. Before I get my copy I will ask what period this book covers lest some people mischievously brand it one sided. Curiosity...
  Ato's Response
Most of the pieces were written under Kufuor's regime. So criticisms of bias are expected. Let me know what you think after you've read the book.

Ato, writing against Kufour's regime without scrutinizing his predecessor or the new president makes it bias. Next time include all of them and it will be a good piece. This is more of you against kufour's regime but it should reflect all the regime's in Ghana in the future.

Ok, ok. I asked for preview, now I've got them. The 3 reviews from Theophilus Yartey, Uncle Ben and now Nana Ama has offered me the needed preview of the book. But I've got info for you. As ardent reader of Ephson's newspaper, I've got a stack of all these articles. And these are what I plan to do.

I'll cut the relevant pages and bind and read. I will title it. "Pretending to be President - the Original", Compiled by Adowa, written by atokd.

my advert for the compilation will read as follows:
"if you want to read Ghana's most irreverent on newsprint and in chronology by which Uncle Ben showed, read Adowa's compilation. The nostalgia is better experienced here!!"

Ayikoooooooooooooooo.

Am highly disappointed in u, for writing such crap about our King.
You have amply demonstrated your emptiness and lack of understanding of the issues relating to the Techiman-Tuobodom impasse.
In any case who deceived you into thinking that we are 'equal' before the law in this country?
Ask the President whether indeed he can choose any other chief above the 'Otumfuo'?
How dare u say 'he should take his Asante tribe somewhere'.
Asantes are watching..
