Kudos, Arthur K

I want to congratulate Dr. Arthur Kennedy for his seminal book on why the NPP lost the elections in 2008. ‘Chasing the Elephant into the Bush’ was launched in Accra yesterday. Of course, I don’t agree with everything he says in the book. But he deserves to be commended not just for the effort but for the courage to spill the beans.

It fascinates me that the book has drawn so much controversy –from NPP supporters and bigwigs who should know better. But it doesn’t surprise me. It’s one of the reasons why the NPP lost the elections in the first place – the elephant likes to behave like an ostrich.

In publishing the book, Arthur Kennedy has been criticized for placing his personal commercial interests above that of the party. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Arthur K’s book helps the NPP more than it hurts it. People who desire to lead this country should know this simple fact and welcome the book as a catalogue of prescriptions for the flailing party.

Lacking an ability to visualize the future, however, it’s understandable that people like K. T. Hammond and some so-called social commentators will criticize Arthur K for betrayal of confidence, disloyalty and other silly infractions of little consequence. If washing the party’s dirty linen in public forces NPP to be honest with itself, so be it.

Those who don’t see the benefit of what Arthur Kennedy has done today are the very people who led the NPP into the jaws of defeat and didn’t even realize the harm they were causing. Those who decide to read the book and use it as a working document to make the NPP a better party will be victors again – someday. Then Arthur K will be hailed as the sensible hero he’s shaping up to be.

What the members of NPP are doing to Arthur K is typical of African politicians and their followers. These politicians are always happy with people who will- and therefore can only- sing their praise no matter what they do. The same thing would have happened in NDC. What do you see as party members? Boot lickers and sychophants who parade themselves on the airwaves as media laisons and propagandists. Shame on them all.

Ato, there are parts i agree with u but others i do not agree with u. Publishing the book was good but some facts are not right and also washing the party's dirty linen in public in not on. And some confidential information AK, put across. The party leaders shd work their ass out and study the book critically to pick the salient points and work on them to make the party strong. They shd put their individual egos aside and work for the betterment of all Ghanaians. Kudos Dr. A.K. and for Ato am waiting for ur book.

Ato,People who can think hundred years ahead will always have problems with people who jsut think around, when ever a mind is made clear. What were they hiding that AK has exposed? Is he not more a member of the party?People who resist critics hardly grow. They should allow the man a breathing space and pat him for prescribing right medication for their ailment.

  Hi-Ato,

Your phrase below does not make sense to me!!!

"And that’s why I believe strongly that people didn’t vote for Atta Mills and the NDC per se – they rather voted against John Kufuor and the NPP"

If at all the good peolple of Ghana voted against X-Prez Kufour & NPP based on the facts you've enumerated infavour His Excellency Prof. John Evans Atta Fiifi Mills & the NDC which was the ultimate and largest opposition party to salvage Ghanains from such Doldrums then why that phrase.

What was the reason behind the door-to-door, market-to-market etc for?

The people of Ghana voted for Prez. Attah Mills based on his message for Better Ghana AGENDA to Best Man.

The brand new opposition though outdooring the sickness and playing non-stop R & B Mantra of His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings that a vote for Prof. Attah Mills is a vote for J.J. Rawlings was the yard stick that can maintain power for them but Alas!!!!!!!!!!!

Over compacency took the Brand New opposition to where they belong today and His Excellency Prez. Prof. John Evans Attah Fiifi Mills & His NDC will pack them to deepeer side of the BUSH Come 2012.

So Ato NDC coming to power was ordained and not per se!

I bear to differ.................

Slowly but surely, we will get there. When the likes of P. C. Appiah-Fori are treasured for their openness and pursuit of public good.

Arthur K's day in the light will come when the party fails to recapture power in successive elections and they do some introspective analysis.

For all our sakes, I pray that it comes sooner than later.

Hi Ato,I am sure this in not the place for what I am going to write but I hope you will understand. I want to beg you to tell whoever is involve in News File on JoyFM to do us good by taking Kwaaku Baako from that programme or better still he(Kwaaku) should be made to come every Saturday. I am saying this because Baako is a very good journalist and many others look to him for inspiration and what I can see now is that he is leading all our journalists to a wrong direction. Kwaaku Baako doesn't see anything wrong with NPP and he sees everything wrong with NDC. Is that what we mean by journalism? The best Kwaako can say about NPP is that, we all have our problems. I can see many journalists doing the samething and I am very sure that they are all leading from what Kwaaku Baako is doing. May be JoyFm should talk about it, if they think that, that is what Ghana need they can go on. Thanks once again and sorry for this.

I don't seem to get it when people comment on the fact that Arthur Kennedy is washing the NPP's dirty linen in public. Whatever the case is, the parties dealings are supposed to be open to all stakeholders including the general public. Upholding utmost secrecy in NPP's is not the best. The party's motives and purpose for its existence must be made public and subject to scrutiny so that it can be shaped into a credible party to win the heart of the masses again, that is, if they can.

Ato, in the bible in the book of Proverbs it says "correct a fool and you will receive a blow to ur jaw; but a wise will welcome criticism" another part also says "he who i love i chastise" If our politicians especially in NPP are wise they will embrace Arthur K's book for their proper assessment and homework but if they like they should behave like the foolish ostrich and call him a traitor. A word to a Wise............ But Ato, what is the price of this book and where can one obtain a copy? God bless Ghana.

  Ato,

There are some points that need to highlighted in the book for good measure.Am very much disappointed the NPP did not take enough time to carefully peruse this book before it commented on this. However it must be said the NPP officially has not commented on this book, which in itself is a shame!!

First let me deal with the good things in this book

1. My heart is gladden by the stance taken Mrs Ofori Atta regarding the decision to drop Hajia Alima mahama from the running mate contest purely because she was not married.

2. My heart is also gladden by the text of how Akufo Addo conducted himself and his ability to work with various people despite their background.

3. There was no plot on/behalf of the NPP to intentionally rig the 2008 polls
4. People like Victor newman are given a good mention and the text states clearly what advice he offered and at what time
5.President Kuffor acted out of the campaign and refused to use state resources to fund the NPP

However there are some portions of the book am against

1.The characterization of some members of the NPP as the Akyem Mafia was in bad taste! We should never as a nation label anyone based on their ethnic affiliations and blanket them all as it were under a bad name. The name Mafia itself has negative connotations and the ethnic element was not the best.

2. In any case when the so called Mafia have brought in the money, why should they not be in charge of spending it thus be part of the spending committee?

3.The book also highlights those in the party that were down right lazy,it dosent serve well for party unity

4. Marketing expertise in crafting a political message is not an end in itself.

5. This book is far too much of an academic exercise, the flaw of which is the ability to constantly insist on itself.

Am sadden by all the news that keeps going on in the NPP,the "leaders" are at see completely. The NPP should quickly get down to the work that needs to be done,as in

a. Elect credible party officials
b. Work towards a new ideal
c. Pounce on the flaws on the NDC quickly and with tact.
d. Taxes are about to go and we are still not hearing any alternatives to raising money for Ghana.

My heart bleeds for NPP,please get up and do now, what must be done and whom is best placed to do it!

I have an observation about washing cloth and hiding it under carpet - it doesn't get dried-up and it ends up stinking soo badly. Dirty linen are meant to be washed and sun-dried at tropical ambient heat. Electric drier doesn't do that better.

Personally, I'm a lover of literally works and I respect persons who put their brains at work to write. My next drive to the bookshop will be to buy the book .... and read.

Congrats, Ato, for congratulating Athur K. I look forward to March 6.

  yeah! congrats to Arthur K.

one positive is that he has got the NPP party to set up a COMMITTEE of 'EMINENT READERS' (coinage mine!) to review the book and advise the party. (REFERENCE: Mac Manu, http://www.citifmonline.com/site/news/news/view/3436/1)

THE REAL DISAGREEMENT:
---------------------
i hope the committee comes to DISAGREE with Arthur K. that the Kufuor govt did achieve anything significant for Ghanaians given all the resources they had at their disposal. all those nonsensical things in the form of 'school feeding' bla bla bla need to be scrapped. i wonder why Mills has rather expanded them while Achimota School is threatened with a close down bcos of lack of infrastructure management and improvement!!!

THE REALITY IS THAT KUFUOR DID NOT ACHIEVE ANY SIGNIFICANT THING FOR GHANAIANS AND HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN REJECTED FOR A SECOND TERM. That is the reality. all that 'Ghana Then, Ghana Now' nonsense was a MIRAGE of great buffoonery dimensions!!!

The Kufuor Record aside, we had a bullheaded person presented to us for president. little logic. just an over-bloated desire (almost like a demand even) to be president!!! That person is Nana Akuffo Addo. and they must tell him to take basic class in logic and come and face reality!!!

IF ANYONE IS CONFUSED ABOUT THAT POINT, THE PERSON SHOULD JUST READ THIS: http://www.citifmonline.com/site/news/news/view/3434/1
i have no problem with his support of candidates in the upcoming elections. forget that point. it's democratic. my issue is about the fact that he says he is SURPRISED that the law that was applied to give that Nana Darkwa guy remand still exists!!!

O YOUR GOD!!! this guy was one time AG & Justice Minister of Ghana under Kufuor and they made a lot of noise about repealing 'criminal libel law' which was definitely a bad law!!! and he makes a lot of noise to be a human rights lawyer of great repute!!! something you don't need to open your eyes before realizing it's not up to half of a truth!!! That is not all. This guy was a long serving member of parliament!!! a law maker!!! if he could not do a simple check to see what laws were there then how did he help us????? ADHOC?????? BULLHEAD??????

now dig this: if this guy was really an apostle of human rights, and if this guy was worth his sort as AG and Justice Minister, then shouldn't he have known that that law exists and that you don't only remove the 'criminal libel law' but also make sure that all other laws that 'abuse' human rights are removed????????? so why run to town with 'crimal libel law' repeal when the job wasn't done????????????

THAT ALSO CONFIRMS THE MIRAGE I MENTIONED ABOVE. They were not properly informed about the environment within which they operated and instead of taking steps to seek information they run about like bulls. sheer adhoc. any wonder then that we ended up in a saloon for a loan????????????????????? the loan that Kweku Baako put his reputation on the line for and we never got while Kweku has not confessed that he even bruised his own reputation!!!

THE GREAT AGREEMENT:
-------------------
I hope the committee of 'eminent readers' come to AGREE with Arthur K. that it's good to wash the dirt in the open!!! Same way, Rawlings to should be allowed to wash the other dirt in the open!!! and the likes of Nana Darkwa should be allowed to hit their heads against walls if they like and speak freely first before being held to account if need be. NO GAGGING!!! NO USELESS SHOW OF POWER!!!

congrats again to Arthur K.
