A demigod snubbed

Few members of the ruling National Democratic Congress joined the party to support an ideology. Most of them got under the umbrella because of one man. Since its formation the NDC has been nothing more than a personality cult, with this one man its demigod. He craves adulation, demands all sorts of sacrifices and – like most gods – he’s almost impossible to please.

No wonder the current high priest in the ‘Akatamanso’ Temple has turned his back on the fastidious demigod. The fact is that the demigod is not as powerful as he used to be. There was a time he used to rule with an iron fist. No one dared stand up against him and he did whatever he pleased. He was powerful.

But that was then.

Now, he’s lost all his powers and he’s fast losing his relevance and his influence. No wonder the high priest has turned his back on him. As vengeful as he’s always been, the demigod wants to strike the high priest with a blow that will make him (the high priest) regret the sacrilege he has committed.

However, the demigod is so weakened that all he can use to strike the high priest are his words – venomous words that seldom make sense and only force the high priest to cover himself in a cloak of obstinacy. Thinking himself wiser, the demigod couches his words as sincere counsel meant to edify the temple, its high priest and those who follow him.

But he’s wrong. He is deceiving himself and his needless outbursts hurt the temple he claims to be protecting and helps the high priest.

You see, in the beginning many thought the high priest was going to allow himself to be tossed about by every foul wind the demigod would blow – even from the bottom. But now, people are realizing that maybe – just maybe – the high priest wants to chart his own path and not walk in the shadows of the wayward demigod.

This is winning the high priest some plaudits. And so even though a lot of people are worried and alarmed at the silly effusions of the demigod, they are thinking that it’s a good sign that someone is calling the demigod’s bluff. The demigod can go around ranting all he wants. With each diatribe more people lose faith in him. It’s even worse when he starts calling one of the high priest’s right hand men as a ‘twit’.

Just a few days ago, the demigod was heard complaining that the one true God is not responding to his prayers. It got me thinking about something I learnt in Sunday School years ago.

My Sunday School teacher taught me that when we pray the one true God above gives us one of three answers. The first could be “yes – you get what you want”. He could also give you an emphatic ‘No’. But He may also tell you to wait. But I just realized that my Sunday School teacher might have unwittingly forgotten to tell me about the fourth possible response from God: “Shut up!”

Someone should tell that to the demigod.

Ato this is really a nice piece and the style is well written but somehow it comes across to me as if you are scared of calling a spade a spade!
JAM is doing an excellent job by shunning the egotistical and arrogant self-display of the lousy Mr. Perfect!
So far I am not too impressed with the overall performance of JAM but on this issue he is doing an excellent job.

We don't need a "someone" to tell him JJR to shut up. We as a people should just tell him to shut up!
And by that I expect any journalist with a solid pair to point that out clear cut and categorically!!
  Ato's Response
This is not a new issue. Writing in this country can be very repetitive sometimes. So I just decided to use a different style. But I've written about this subject before and you can check it here:

  Ato,

What a piece! Guess you wrote well enough alluding to what we all know you are talking about but not admitting publicly. Very good piece, speaking of which you have not replied my mail, not very nice.

The demigod is getting frustrated,he wishes he was in power again or as he did in the past come back into power using the barrel of the gun. What did he do really in his time? what did we get for all his wailing and screaming? After 18years of nonsense he returns to do a dance, another dance or run around.

Did we make a quantum leap in your time? Did you take us from the swamp pits to the high heavens? Didnt you leave us broken and starved! You came punching the high heavens with little or nothing on you and left fat, rich, filthy rich and covered in fine silk.

Just maybe mills wants to carve a new Ghana, free from the shackles of the past and alive to the possibility of what can be. But I have an aching doubt mills cannt lead us to that new land, he knows not where it is and how to get us there.

Mills do us all a favour, keep the demigod quiet and do your four years well, leave us with a new peace, free from NDC/NPP squabbles. A new Ghana open, free and tall

Ladies and Gentlemen, ... and that demigod iiiis ..... your guess is as good as mine:

1) he imprisoned the innocent (knowingly or unknowingly .. it doesn't matter)
2) he confiscated hard earned properties of perceived enemies (actual or perceived)
3)He was a bloody dictator
4) He loves to be worshiped
5) He killed those he could
6) He claims to have salvaged the country ... as if when he arrived we were living on trees.

Hahaha, what a demigod we have ... praise to the demigod!!

In my candid opinion this demigod IS ALWAYS RIGHT but HIS APPROACHES ARE ALWAYS BAD. I perfectly side with Demigod when he claim the 'Twit' go home with motorcade he is not entitled to in the first place and above disturbing the soundsleep of others. Ato if this 'Twit' were to be living behind your house and disturbs your nice sleep with motorcade, i belive you might write a different piece on this topic. God bless Ghana

you are standing up to be counted. your bold piece is in the class of the satires that used to be written by Kwesi Yankah in his Woes of a Kwatriot series.

The truth of the matter is that Rawlings has lost his hold and he is now on the presipice of self doubt . He is almost about to plunge headlong into the abyss of the non-remebered and he is fighting to exert one last last influence.

His self doubt, in the light of the fact that he actaually came to believe himself to be a saviour, and the glaring present political realites in Ghana has sent him on this nonsensical quest.

I hope he does not push his now obviously fragile state of mind into nonthingness before his time.

  Ato's Response
I think he's lost more than his hold. I think he's also lost something above the neckline.

Many Ghanaians would have loved what Rawlings is doing, had he not been soo vengful and seem to do it only to settle some political scores. We need our politicians to be critical of the actions of government anytime neccessary. That is healthy for our polity, but people are just seeing through Rawlings right now. He is bitter about not having control and people see that. He thinks NDC won the elections because of him, but no, they lost twice because of him and people reluctantly voted for the NDC because the were fedup with the corrupt NPP. Rawlings we welcome your criticism of this gov't, but please do not be soo hateful about it. Afterall, you had more than 18 years to do it right and you blew it!

Ato, most people joined the NDC because they didn't foresee the change coming and because it was cheap to enrich yourself in politics,if even you get an appointment for 4 months (eg Muntaka. Also they couldn't join the long queue in NPP.
Rawlings's biggest challenge has been the fact that he learnt a trade that cannot be practiced in Ghana on retirement-military pilot. He thus cannot turn his eyes off something he did for 20 years-the presidency.
When Ato officially retires, he can continue to write till he bids adieu to this world, what about Rawlings?
He is also doing that to avoid prosecution from people he angered by killing their relatives-after all you cannot prosecute a mad man.
The Sam Ablakwas should learn something from Rawlings' predicament.

Do you believe that your enemy's enemy is your friend?

Jah bless.

Ato please next time warn me before I start reading. I nearly chocked on my hot curry. I cant stop laughing. Anyway Ato, u see i have been one of those who kept saying that someday we will have a repeat of Mwanawasa and Chiluba in Ghana between the high priest and the demigod. At the moment the high priest tells us the demigod is not a pain in the neck and that he can speak as much as he wants. We live to see. Down memory lane: On November 28, 2007. The late Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa warned his predecessor Frederick Chiluba who hand picked him not to continue his attacks on the government. Mwanawasa was quoted as saying that his government is greatly disturbed by Chiluba's unwarranted remarks. The president said Chiluba should allow him to do his part as he leads the nation. In nearby Nigeria but for Papa go slow's ill health OBJ would have suffered the same fate. Will this ever happen in the Akatamanso ??? I patiently wait to see.

Rawlings seems to forget that as a former president, he is supposed to offer constructive criticisms and guidance but not to heap insults on people he disagrees with.   Ato,

This is real good piece, the best I think so far. Keep it up!

But come to think of it, is it that the high priest has seen a new god, that is why he is ignoring the demi god? or the demi god has lost all his powers to work all the great miracles so he is losing his followers?... you know these things also happen with some so called men of God when they run out of the needed powers to keep their followers in awe of them...

hmmm... just hope the demi god, does not push the high priest to treat him as his worst 'enemy' did to him some time ago... stripped him of all the honor entitled him...

lets see how patient, our ever calm high priest can be... but so far its seems that the saying that the best answer for a fool is silence, is really working for the high priest; the demi god just can't stand it!

His outburst and choice of words tells you how much he is suffering from keeping so much in his chest. He should give us a break.

I think you and other journalist belong to the cult of the 'demigod' you just described. Sometimes I wonder what Ghanaian Journalists, including Ato, would do without Rawlings. The man is over 50 years old, what would you do when he passes. I guess Ato and other should start consulting with eugenics to see Rawlings can be clown so that they have what to write about for eternity. Ato already agrees with Lord Lugard so that is not a problem for him at all.

  @Ato's Response, @25.somebody,

if you are democratically-challenged, then you need special care to fully integrate with proper democrats who uphold the tenets of democracy, such as freedom of speech, TOLERANCE OF OPINIONS, accountability etc., with an appreciable measure!!!

it means you lack the the needed ingredients to fully participate in the culture of democracy!!!

i'd not sacrifice my democratic belief just bcos Rawlings says something i don't like or agree with!!!
that is what i mean by democratically-challenged!!! that is the idea!!!

So Kwesi Pratt for example is clearly democratically-challenged if (if, i repeat) he says that Rawlings must stop criticizing.

Never before have analogy and/or extended metaphor been put to such brilliant use. I do not quite agree with your assertion about the demigod's loss of power, influence and even relevance. I think strong residues of all that remain precisely because of the earlier observation you make: the founding pivot was a personality cult not ideology. Nevertheless, you provide incredible insight and analysis with this piece.

In democracy, if you think somebody must shut up, you've got all the liberties to tell. But that will not necessarily keep the person mute. That talkative have the fullest of rights to call your bluff and tell you to go to hell.

In all these, the rights of others must be kept at a distance from being trampled upon. The characteristics of undemocratic persons are their inability and unwillingness to know where to draw the line so as not to cross it. Even when they're shown the line, they turn the tenets of democracy upside down by laying claims to right they don't possess in anyway - saying "it my rights to speak my mind". For example, it is not in anybody's rights to insult anybody.

Ato, I have had my problems with you because I believed(and justifiably so) that you were ridiculing Mills(ecomini etc) to run him down politically, but I am right with you on this JJ's whiskey nonsense. Look, I hate the mafioso NPP and their policies so I must be NDC. I cannot understand the insults and tantrums of JJ anymore. JJ either as a military despot or president would never tolerate such nonsense from anyone. JJ has a problem with Kojo Tsikata,Totobi Kwakye,Ahwoi's,Kwesi Botchway etc and as such Mills should also have problem with them. Its very sad. Just after a FEC elections that did not go your way, you just go attacking your own party's president, what nonsense. JJ is just giving away NDC to the Dogs ie " Iam not having my way so I would spoil it" It about time people like Yaw Boateng-Gyan,Haruna Iddrisu,Hanna Tetteh,Afriyie-Ankrah and co, in a decorus way complain to JJ for him to stop such nonsense. Atta Mills(a gem) problems with fantis in the 2000 & 2004 elections were all due to the perception of such nonsense from JJ

I decided sometime ago not to listen to anything Rawlings when I diagnosed his psychiatric condition. However I reversed my decision to listen to his 'who born dog' tape and I think Rawlings is perfectly right. What he expressed in that tape is what 'most' Ghanaians are saying.
What is this stupidity of we giving Mills time to fix the economy? Is that what he promised us?that when voted to power Ghanaians should be patient with him to finish filing his belly before we go for the leftover? Didn't we see him before he became president? Hasn't he changed for having good living now? Did't I know Ablakwa before he became a professional thief? hasn' t he changed?what about Kwesi pratt, Omane Boamah? havent't they changed? and on....and people are complaining about Rawlings?

  @46. Adowa,
i hardly come across confused people like you!!!
such hypocrisy you display with sheer folly!!!

look at yourself, LOOK IN THE MIRROR, you claim that "For example, it is not in anybody's rights to insult anybody." ----AND JUST BEFORE THAT YOU CLAIMED, AND I QUOTE AGAIN "That talkative have the fullest of rights to call your bluff and tell you to go to hell."

now, tell me???? which is the principle?????? i can't see any coherence!!! it's sheers contradiction and nonsense!!!

first i bet you don't even know what an insult is. if somebody tells me to go to hell and i find that insulting, what would it be then?????? democratic or undemocratic or right or no right?????? WHICH IS WHICH??????

AND WHAT LINE DRAWING ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT????? even in dictatorships there are a lot of lines being drawn!!! so what is the noise about lines????? what lines?????

MEANWHILE, i did not say that no body has the right to yell 'shut up'. MY POINT IS THAT ANYBODY WHO YELLS SHUT UP IS DEMOCRATICALLY-CHALLENGED. because that person does not appreciate the tenets of democracy properly!

you can yell anything you want in a proper democracy as a matter of right!!! but it does not mean that whatever you yell advances democracy!!! for example, you must have the right to yell DICTATORSHIP in a proper democracy, BUT SURELY DICTATORSHIP DOES NOT IN ANYWAY ADVANCE DEMOCRACY!!!

so better use your head properly and not give me rubbish!!!

Gone were the days when humans and animals shared the same trait that is to be ruled by people who they did not have a say in electing. for one to say that rawlings is a despotic dictator and yet like to chief in his village or the king in his city smacks of hypocrisy. Today democracy has come to seperate humans and animals.
