| THE BLACK STARS: Shining again |
| 31 Jan 2010 | 08:42 PM |
It was their best performance in the tournament. Yet it was the performance that ended the incredible journey of a youthful, inexperienced Black Stars squad that had been written off by so many.
Having forced me to eat humble pie on more than one occasion over the past three weeks, I guess I should be saying that I am entitled to the last laugh because my prediction that they won’t win the cup came true. But I am not laughing.
This is not a team that should be laughed at for losing. Getting to the finals of AFCON 2010, the first time Ghana has made it this far in 18 years, is no mean feat. That it came from a team many expected so little from is an achievement worth celebrating.
At the very least, they restored my hope in the Black Stars. I lost all faith in the senior national team in 1994 after infighting culminated in their disgraceful exit from the Cup of Nations in Tunisia. They didn’t disgrace themselves (and the nation) as many had expected and for that they can go around with their heads held high.
This Black Stars squad has also proved a very important point that big names do not necessarily make a great team. That’s why the team made it to the finals of ACFON for the first time in 18 years with unknown and inexperienced players. They’ve vindicated my position that the Black Stars are better off without the likes of Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari.
Finally, this Black Stars squad has provided many Ghanaians with an inspirational story that any group of individuals can get to the heights they aspire even when they’ve been written off by everyone else. The morale here is pretty simple: it’s bad enough to be written off. What’s worse, though, is for you to write yourself off. The Black Stars, I think, came this far because they refused to write themselves off. By believing in themselves, they made the nation proud and put smiles on millions of faces. Even those faces which frowned at the coach's decision to field such an inexperienced squad have been lit up.
It’s been an amazing two weeks for the like of Kwadwo Asamoah, Andre Ayew and Anthony Annan. Their achievements in Angola (more than the performance of the likes of Essien in Germany in 2006) should restore Ghana to its position as a football powerhouse in Africa. If our football administrators are wise enough to keep this squad together, I am optimistic that they will create some big waves at the World Cup in South Africa – and wherever they play in the future.
For all of these reasons, I have little choice than to put all my pessimism and start from now on to start rooting for the Black Stars again. And, truly, it feels very good.

Ato, I have always been with you in your predictions or fears for the Ghanaian team. God will have been unfair to everybody if Ghana had won this tournament 'cos Egypt was more organized and prepared than Ghana. If we want to win the cup in future, we should should organize ourselves better than we did before this tournament. Meanwhile those lurking in the dark to torpedo the present GFA Executives should remember that we would not forgive them if the disturb the peace in the FA throuh agitations for the removal of the F.A. executives. Let's complete the World Cup before we think of changing the FA Leadership.

Ato, well spoken about the Black Stars and I do agree with you that the likes of Essien and Muntari should never be called to the Black Stars. For me it is not how muct this young boys performed but how committed they are to Ghana. Everybody here is talking about how the inexperienced Black Stars have performed. What else do we want if not the good name of Ghana. I stop supporting Ghana Black Stars in 1992, but if GFA should keep this boys they can be sure of my 100% support. Thanks Ato for everything. I hope to see you in Ghana sometime in June.

Ato stop your day dreaming..."If our football administrators are wise enough to keep this squad together, I am optimistic that they will create some big waves at the World Cup in South Africa – and wherever they play in the future".
Over your dreams! Lets be realistic and get out of wishful thinking. Ghana should pray to get all our TEAM A players fit and strong for the World Cup. The WC is no place for experimentation. This is the time to bring on the Stephen Appiahs, the Essiens, Sulley Muntaris and Kingstons; intersped with youthful blood like Adiya, Ayew and others. We need our TEAM A now if we plan to enter into the semis in South Africa. We should put all our pettiness aside and select our best squad ever!!

I agree with Joy,we must select our best squad ever! We have enough cover for midfield and defense,what is very weak is the attack! Agogo,Quincy,Tagoe should be looked at again,and we need cover for Olele.
Opoku Agyeman is raw,but what heart he has, and he gave it all for Ghana!!

We to comend the players for their self dicipline and determination which took them this far. I believe that we would hav won the match, but for the lack of technical knowhow we lost to the egyptians. I think it is our coach who let us down when we needed him most. If you noticed wel by the 20th minute in the second half one could see how exhausted gyan and co. Were and i was expecting the coach to have made some changes up-front. He waited until we went down then the change came but it was a defender coming for a forward. How on earth should you defend when you are already down. Ato, i fear that this coach will commit similar mistakes when we meet serbia at the world cup.

Ato, what about your dream champion for AFCON 2010 - Elephants of Ivory Coast - before the tournament?
What lessons can be drawn from their performance, any thoughts from them:
(a) is it over-believing in themselves that they boast of the best foreign-based materials on the continent?
(b) or, they writing-off of their opponents before a match?
(c) or, the team is now descending the ladder after their ascension to the finals in 2006.
2006: Runners-up
2008: Semi finalist
2010: Quarter finalist
Thanks for your piece.

Ato well said but i still believe if the black stars team were more experienced we would have been able to beat Egypt. i am not writing off the young boys but i think we still need essien, sulley, appiah, quincy and the likes in our world cup team, lets be honest with ourselves this boys didn't play well in all the matches except for this Egypt match. moreover the world cup is not a place for experiment.

Bravo-o-o-o!! The 'Team B' Black Stars' performance against Egypt was spectacular. They hv made Ghana proud. I think their performance in this tournament will send shivers down the spines of the so-called stars who want Ghanaians to worship them. Now, they have perfect competitors and Ghanaians will worship those who are dedicated and are able to make Ghana proud. Congratulations to our gallant Black Stars! They are our heroes!!

Ato welcome back home, where you belong. Do you remember, when the U-20 won the world cup in Egypt last year, you suggested we keep them together for use 10 years from now. Then I countered your argument by saying they will be past their prime before the 10 years come so we must blend them with the seniors for use in South Africa? If you remember, I am sure you will now agree that I was very right.
Now to all those who were insulting the coach for what you claim as ugly display by the Black Stars, and that we been winning only due to luck. You got your beautiful football in the finals, but what did that bring us? The beautiful football did not win us the cup. The lesson here is that football is not mathematics or science, how you play is less important, it is the goals that matters.

Ato the world cup will be played by world class players and all our top players if fit and on form should be there. Although we made it to to the final, tell me one game that you watched without a squeaky bum. The chances that Angola,Burkina and Nigeria missed will not be missed by the world class players we will be playing against. Dede Ayew despite scoring against Burkina was a passenger in most of the games and is not ready yet?Tell me one telling pass or cross he made in the Afcon.At the world cup we cannot afford to carry anyone and as for Essien and Muntari, i think their quality is on displayed in the top leagues in the world for you to see if you care to watch. The World cup is no joke, so lets be objective and listen to the experienced players in the squad not because of their status but because of the level at which they play and the world class players they play against weekly.

Ato, ghanaians never seize to amaze me. I am not the least surprised by the clarion call to get rid of the so-called senior players. if we want to be frank with ourselves, these 'young' (i really dont know how young they are)players made it all the way to the final not because they were exceptionally good, but because of the ease with which the various oppositions they met squandered chances that were easier to score than to miss. the team struglled to put more than three passes together and i can count the number of chances they created in the whole competition. against efficient strikers, like the ivorian players, the team was no match. an objective view of all their matches with the exception of the finals clearly exposes the fact that for the wastefulness of the opposition teams our team would have been disgraced. clearly we cant take such a team to the world stage. let us slow down the haste with which we push away their real quality players we have. a good blend of the quality of the likes of essien, muntari, painstil, mensah etc would help our cause than these so called young players.

i agree with kojo, how many chances did they create in the whole competition? i guess in the land of the blind, the one-eyed is the king. look at how ghanaians are rejoicing even when we lost in an african cup final. our excuse is that the players were young. when did soccer become a game of oldmen? egypt has won the cup three times in a row and it seems we feel much more accomplished than them. what mediocrity! the truth is we need to put our acts together before we get disgraced on the world stage. a midfield built around essien, muntari, asamoah and annan could do us some good.

@Ato's Response @23. somebody,
Ato i believe i can tell the difference between you and a hater of Asamoah Gyan. hence I won't grant your request.
the haters of Asamoah Gyan are those who described him as useless. and he has proven that he is not useless. he could be useful as he has always been anyway!!!

@30. p,
The issue about the players being young is as crassssssss as saying some are old. there's no sense in it. even so, this team has players whose stated ages are questionable. and we know too that a good number of them are among the 'old' anyway: goalkeeper Kingston, Eric Addo etc.
i don't see the need for the over-jubilation. yet i also don't think we should belittle the performance.

@kojo .29
thanks for the clear analysis. Most Ghanaian minds are easily obfuscated with the least bit of achievement they fail to properly disect a given issue. these boys, kudos to them for getting to the final, are not in anyway shape or form world cup material if you compare their performance to world class football. And that is the standard they ought to be measured up to, not what was displayed at Can2010. Its the height of naivety to think we can put aside essien , muntari, appiah, etc. etc and still achieve world cup glory. like you said if those teams we played against had taken their chances, we would have been knocked out far earlier on in the competition. Why are we so filled with mediocrity????

Great teams don't always win trophies. Ivory Coast are a great team - just that they don't win trophies. They are like Arsenal. I'd rather support a great team that doesn't win trophies than sing the praises of a team which doesn't exist, which is what the Black Stars have been since 1992.
Ato, you cant be serious about the above quote. based on what do u declare ivory coast a great team. Yes Great teams win trophies, Brazil, Italy, Germany etc. that is how we know you are great, when you win and play good football doing so. Ivory Coast, a great team? twiaa!!!
