AMPEM-DARKO: The lawmakers’ scapegoat

Members of parliament are demanding some R-E-S-P-E-C-T! And they are using the director-general of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation to make their case. It all stems from William Ampem-Darko’s verbal exchanges with the MP for Adansi-Asokwa, KT Hammond.

Mr. Hammond started it all by questioning the competence of Mr. Ampem-Darko (which is something I do quite often) and the GBC boss retorted with a few insulting words of his own. But his words were not just directed at KT Hammond. He also used a word like “gyimifuo” (stupid people) to refer to Mr. Hammond and his fellow MPs.

One of the lawmakers filed a complaint with the privileges committee of the house, which was later tasked to look into the matter. A hearing was fixed and Mr. Ampem-Darko – pretending to be remorseful – went to say how sorry he felt for insulting the MPs. Yesterday, the house adopted a resolution spelling out the punishment for the GBC boss. He is supposed to render an apology on all GBC platforms – GTV and all the corporation’s radio networks. He is required to read the apology himself – at his cost.

MP for Sekondi, Papa Owusu-Ankomah, believes that this will bring Ghanaians to the realisation that “affronting the dignity of this house is something that ought not to be contemplated by anyone.”

The punishment is disproportionate and it just amounts to an overbearing attempt by the MPs – some of whom seem to have personal grudges with Mr. Ampem-Darko – to tell the nation that they deserve a little more respect.
First of all, Mr. Ampem-Darko didn’t insult the MPs on all GBC platforms. The insults were traded on the precincts of parliament. Some journalists recorded it and played it on a few radio stations in Accra. The verbal altercation was never aired on GBC. And it wasn’t Mr. Ampem-Darko who caused it to be played on the likes of Citi FM. So where from this edict that he should render an apology on all GBC platforms?

Secondly, Mr. KT Hammond also insulted Mr. Ampem-Darko and those who work under him. Is it fair for parliament to force Mr. Ampem-Darko to apologise on such a wide media network whiles the MP who started it all goes scott-free? I don’t think so.

I wish Mr. Ampem-Darko had a pair of healthy, strong, globular balls to refuse to render the apology in the manner the MPs are demanding and tell them to go to hell and do their worst. But his pair has been badly squished and he needs to keep his job. So he is likely to do the MPs’ bidding.

But the MPs should realise that even if Mr. Ampem-Darko goes to sit on BBC and CNN to shed remorseful tears and apologise, it won’t earn them the respect they do not want to work for.

MPs who approve agreements without reading them will not be served with respect on a silver platter. MPs who constantly report late for work cannot just demand to be revered. Lawmakers who do not want to be referred to as “fools” should not pass resolutions that are inimical to the interests of the people they are supposed to be representing – only to later offer an excuse that they were in the bathroom pissing at the time of passage.

So the majority leader’s threat to clampdown on people who disrespect and insult parliament rings very hollow.
“When you insult parliament or a member of parliament, it is Ghana you are insulting,” Alban Bagbin claims “I have got so many copies of publications running down parliament and running down members of parliament... they are eroding the basis of our multiparty democracy.”

Crap!

It is Mr. Bagbin and his colleagues who have running themselves down with senseless decisions – like approving that outrageous retirement package for John Kufuor and his ilk. They are the ones threatening our democracy. The earlier they wise up, the better for us all.

They can bully Mr. Ampem-Darko and squeeze his balls as hard and for as long as they like. It won’t earn them respect they do not deserve. Whether Mr. Ampem-Darko apologises or not, several Ghanaians will continue to think like he does: that there are quite a lot of “stupid people” in that house!

Ato, does MPs deserve our respect when some of them had been slapping their friends in the chambers?
I think KT Hammond is also an apology of MPs; he should learn to be civilled and decorous; if he leaves in a glass house he should not throw stones. MPs should wise up otherwise ...
  Ato's Response
Thanks for bringing the issue of the slap up. It all adds to the house's baggage of disrespect.

Hmmmmmmm! Ato, u see it is about time public servants realised that governments will come and go but their institutions will be there (for ever). You know, this whole thing started when Mr. Ampem-Darko tried changing his "broadcasting" strategy when his party lost power (obviously his interest and job supersedes that of his party). Very peeved some MP's K T Hammond and Dan Kwaku Botwe included launched an attack on the man’s creditability and asked gov't to give him the boot. Mr. Ampem-Darko will not let sleeping dogs lie and also in defending himself attacked which is the best form of defence. Now he’s been made to know who’s boss. Ato not just an apology but unqualified apology (whatever that means). As for the majority leader am sure he woke up from the wrong side of his bed. I cannot for a moment understand why these MP’s always seem to want to play god. See how they behave at vetting, asking for cars and all sorts. But I don’t blame these selfish people who call themselves honourables. If someone had gone to them and said it like it is, then I am sure they will rethink but it seems everyone thinks more of their stomachs so yea these so called honourables can play gods. I will want to know what at all can they do if Mr. Ampem-Darko or anyone who appears refuses to be pushed around, what aaaaaaaaaaaaahhh! Can they do?. Privileges Indeed.!!!!
  Ato's Response
They can't do jack! If I were in Mr. Ampem-Darko's shoes, I'd ask them to jail me.

When I once asked what you were made of, you said clay...you remember ?
I wonder if you read through your wrote ups after posting them and if you do how you really fell my brother.
Check it out how Ampem Darko is going to read de apology on air all by hemself:
"Ladies & Gentlemen, you're watching GTV news at 7pm, the nation's number one station...Ampem Darko is my name..." then he goes on and on to the delight of our MP's.
Will this erode the perception from the ordinary citizenry that they are as corrupt as de word itself ?
Have a good day
  Ato's Response
... and after reading the apology, he will say in typical GBC style: "this is how we bring the curtain down on this apology. Until next time, by for now."

i also thought the same: as much as Ampem Darko needs to aologis, K.T Hammond also needs to say sorry to Ampem Darko. Are the MPs saying because K.T Hammond is an MP, he has the right to insult while Ampem Darko cannot do so? the ruling is absolute CRAP!

Yeah baby (re, re, re ,re)
Whip it to me (respect, just a little bit)
When you get home, now (just a little bit)

I imagine the MPs chanting the above verse of Aretha Franklin’s hit song R-E-S-P-E-C-T. They are telling the sovereign people of Ghana to respect them.

Guess for what? They are saying
“your votes get us power sweet as honey. But guess what? So is our service”. Service indeed. WTF! We will give them RESPECT if they respect US first and/or in return. If an MP insults me (in public or private), I will respond with proportionate force. Let us serve them the warning.

I really feel sorry for Mr. Ampem-Darko for allowing these bunch of "irresponsible and ill-mannered" people who call themselves "law-makers" to be squeezing his balls like that. If it were the likes of you, Ato, i don't think you would ever stand so low to those "criminals". I don't even know why we should be voting for them. They are just irritating. I just can figure out what is going on.......
Ato, i think it is high time we stopped this. What do you think? If Ghanaians are really behind me, i think we should all just call it quits in elections and allow only them and their families to vote? What do you think ato?
  Ato's Response

i thought so many people were saying Obama had come to give us sense! so "Man In The Mirror" (i miss MJ already); have you got the sense now?????????

vote "And so?".

But who told the MPs they have any respect among the people of this country? Perhaps with their family relations and many, many handbag girlfriends they do. But for the people of this country they have ABSOLUTELY NO RESPECT AT ALL. What have they done since they went there: If it's not about quack loans from China, it will be about senseless walk-outs. The so-called House has become nothing but a fertile soil for loot, and it's important the self styled MPs understood that. They should stop wincing and get their integrity on the high before asking anyone to respect them. How on earth could persons who want respect approve retirement benefits when they have not seen nor read the content of documents. Crappie-crap is what they are and it's important they are told. If they want respect they should start behaving respectfully. I don't support what Ampem-Darko or KT Hammond said to each other but i want the MPs to know the people of this country have little respect for them because they don't respect themselves. If they do they'll not run around like kids who are running after a confined confined puppy at a shopping mall. Crap.

Alan Bagbin's comment that when you insult parliament you insult the house is hollow and laughable. It reminds me of totalitarian regimes where it is deemed criminal to 'mock' the president, especially through satirical media like cartoons.

This stupidity illustrated by Bagbin seeks to deify our MPs. Many Ghanaians, I am sure, have little or no respect for MPs, and instead of working hard to regain the people's trust, they strut around like fancy peacocks demanding respect. Respect my foot!!

Our MPs are not tin gods. If they are a den of thieves, corrupt, self-serving idiots, then there is nothing wrong with saying so. Sanctimonious bastards they are.

It is unfortunate that Ampem-Darko should succumb to their stupid demands. he shoudl have told them to go to hell and insisted that he would only withdraw his remarks if KT Hammond withdrew his.

Just feels like having a little Akan class.
FYI ... gyimifuo is singular. the plural form is agyimifuo. Here the plural marker is the prefix 'a'.

The same principle applies to Akan word like okyerekyerefuo(singular): the plural is akyerekyerefuo. In some cases the plural marker is both the prefix 'a' and the suffix 'fuo'. example: osikani (singular) the plural form is asikafuo.

Awwww!!! Adowa is also Akan teacher

Respect is earned, not demanded. Those MPs must know we know their modus operandi. The least the say about demanding respect for themselves the better. They should quietly and tirelessly change how they serve the people of Ghana, not only having the people's interest but doing things in a much more dignified manner. Until then, they shouldn't take umbrage if they are referred to as 'Sankwas' or 'gyimifuo'.

Parliament might succeed in squeezing an apology from Mr Ampem Darko but that would not remove the negative perception most Ghanaians have about MPs and parliament generally.Indeed most Ghanaians perceive MPs to be senselessly selfseeking and MPs do not do much to disprove these perceptions but rather confirm these perceptions through actions such as approving end of service benefits for themselves and until they change this self-seeking attitude, Ghanaians would continually perceive them to be a virtual bunch of hopelessly senseless if not useless guys only seeking after their interest.

listen to MP for Sekondi, Papa Owusu-Ankomah, who believes that forcing Mr Ampem Darko to appologise to them will bring Ghanaians to the realisation that “affronting the dignity of this house is something that ought not to be contemplated by anyone.” Kai, what the hell does he mean by that? Has members of parliarment got any dignity? If they ever had any dignity, it evaporated since that day an MP got involved in that insurance fraud, it got evaporated since the day an MP was arrested with tonnes of HEROINE, a narcotic drug, their dignity got evaporated when they passed a bill that autorises the soveigne state of Ghana to seek a loan from a hair dressers saloon in the UK, since that day an MP slapped a colleague MP in parlirament, since that day they passed a bill selling VALCO to a ghost buyer and most recently when they sold their conscience for a mere $5000.00.
In any case who told those guys and gals in that house built by Kwame Nkrumah that respect is demanded? Respect is never demanded, it is earned so they cannot force anybody to respect them when they are engaged in disrespecfull actions PERIOD.

if Ampem-darko is himself a parliamentarian, then surely he owes his fellow parliamentarians an apology for insulting them. But he is not. He is an individual who got into a quarrel with another individual who happens to be a member of parliament and words of insult were traded. Parliament is being silly requiring the man to apologize to them. These are two grown men, let them deal with their problems. its childish for parliament to step in and act like they are also responsible for disciplining and teaching good manners to ghanaians.

  Ato,

Our MPs may have their shortfalls.
I do not think the way to handle this issue is how you went about it. Africans have respect for our elders. No matter how "stupid" or wrong they are.

It is wrong for you (Ato) to provide the medium for our lawmakers to be insulted. Remember, we are now building our democratic institutions.I do not think holding them accountable means insulting them. The earlier you desist from this the better. What you are doing is ungodly.

Please let us hold our MPs accountable but let's not insult them, for they our fathers, mothers, uncles and aunties.
